When we call or walk into the pharmacy asking for a refill, sometimes we have to get the prescription renewed.  It’s important to get the script renewed quickly and efficiently.

First, if you’re able to plan ahead, try to get your prescriptions earlier in the work week.  Many doctors work Mondays through Fridays.  If there are any questions or if a new prescription is necessary, it’s helpful to catch the doctor when he or she is in the office.

A year ago, I received a call from a nurse who was concerned about too much information.  She noticed that the size of her doctors’ notes had increased.  Whereas she previously only scanned 3 or 4 pages, now she regularly scans 6 or 8.  When she reviewed the pages, she saw that there was some additional information she didn’t need (such as previously-administered medications, and old diagnoses).

This nurse is on the front end of information overload in clinical EMR systems.  ...
